Have questions about braces? We’ve got answers!
- June 1, 2026
Getting braces can feel exciting, but there might be a few unknowns. We’re here to help patients feel comfortable and informed, especially when they’re getting braces for the first time and everything feels new. Here are a few common questions kids ask before they start their braces journey.
Do braces hurt?
Every patient’s pain tolerance is different, but braces don’t hurt when they are applied to the teeth. There is an adjustment period after your braces are on, and your teeth may feel a little sore afterward that generally lasts less than a week. Soft foods, cold treats, and a little patience can help!
Do I still have to brush my teeth when I have braces?
Yes! Absolutely. Brushing becomes even more important once you have appliances on your teeth. Braces create extra places for food to hide, so keeping your teeth clean helps prevent cavities and keeps your smile healthy during treatment.
How do I brush and floss with braces?
Brushing with braces takes a little extra time. We’ll teach you everything you need to know about how to properly take care of them. To start, it’s best to angle your toothbrush around brackets and wires. We always review oral hygiene at each and every appointment to either reinforce and encourage a job well-done or provide some extra tips to get all the braces and teeth clean. We’ll also teach you how to use floss tools designed for braces like threaders.
Will braces make me talk funny?
As you adjust to your new appliances, you may notice a slight difference in the way you talk. But your mouth adjusts quickly! Reading out loud, singing, or talking often helps you get used to them faster.
Can I choose my braces colors?
Yes! One of the fun parts of braces is choosing your band colors. Have a favorite team? Do you want a color that matches a holiday? Love a rainbow? Try it all! Each appointment you have the option to chose the colors on your braces to let you show your personal style.
Can I still play sports?
Absolutely! If you play sports, especially contact sports, we recommend a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces. We offer high-quality mouthguards for all of our patients and have custom options if your sport requires it. Our mouthguards made from a high-grade silicone designed for extra cushion and comfort.
Can I still play an instrument?
Of course. Kids and adults can still continue playing their instrument with only minor adjustments that you learn with practice. It may feel a little different at first, but after some time (hours or days), you should be back to making beautiful music.
What happens if a bracket falls off?
Don’t panic! These things happen. If you have a loose or have a broken bracket, let your parents know and reach out to our office at (402) 489-8841 to get in for an appointment.
Will I have to stop eating my favorite foods?
A: Not necessarily! Some crunchy, sticky, or extra chewy foods may need extra attention when caring for your appliances, but we do encourage some diet modifications to avoid foods that may pull braces or wires out of position.
Why do I even need braces?
Braces do more than give you a great smile! They help straighten your teeth, improve your bite, create room for your tongue, and improve your overall oral health!
How often do I need to visit the orthodontist?
Typically, you’ll visit every few weeks so Dr. Willett can check progress and make any adjustments needed along the way. These appointments help ensure your smile is moving in the right direction!
What happens when my braces come off?
Brace removal day is exciting, both for our patients and our team! We’ll remove the brackets and clean your teeth. Then, you’ll get to reveal your brand-new smile. We’ll also help you get fitted for your retainer.
How long do I need to wear a retainer?
Retainers are important because they help keep your teeth in their new positions after braces come off. Think of them as the final step in protecting your new smile.
Are braces just for kids?
No. Kids, teens, and adults get braces. It’s never too early or too late to get started on your journey.
Can I still smile in pictures?
Please do! You should be proud to show off your colorful bands and better every day smile. The best part is getting to see your smile adjust over time and you never know: you may be in the dental field some day and want to share that you’ve experienced the work first-hand!
