Have Orthodontic Questions? We’ve Got Answers.
- September 30, 2026
Orthodontic treatment can come with plenty of questions, especially when you’re trying to figure out what’s right for you or your child. We’re answering some of the orthodontic questions we hear most often to help you feel more informed, confident, and comfortable every step of the way. Let’s get started!
1. What age should I bring my child in to see an orthodontist?
Our team typically begins seeing children around age 7, the age recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists for a first orthodontic evaluation. At this age, Dr. Emily Willett can assess how the teeth and jaws are developing and identify any concerns that may benefit from early attention. An evaluation at age 7 doesn’t mean treatment is needed right away—many children are simply monitored as they grow. If a parent or dentist notices a concern sooner, we’re always happy to see your child earlier.
2. How long does orthodontic treatment take?
There’s no set timeline for orthodontic treatment—every smile and treatment plan is different. Treatment length depends on what needs to be corrected, how the teeth and jaws are developing, and the type of treatment recommended. Some children may benefit from waiting for all permanent teeth to come in, while others may benefit from Phase 1 treatment followed by comprehensive treatment later. For teens and adults, timing varies based on the complexity and goals of treatment. Dr. Willett will discuss your anticipated timeline and recommended treatment during your consultation. Typically, phase 1 treatment should take less than 1 year and comprehensive treatment should take less than 2 years, with the average being 18 months.
3. What types of orthodontic treatment does Lincoln Orthodontics offer?
We offer a variety of treatment options for children, teens, and adults, tailored to each patient’s needs and goals. Options may include expanders, space maintainers, partial or traditional braces, Invisalign® clear aligners, or InSmile behind-the-teeth braces. Dr. Willett will evaluate your smile and bite and recommend the treatment that’s right for you—because orthodontic care isn’t one-size-fits-all.
4. Do braces or aligners hurt?
“Pain” isn’t usually how we describe orthodontic treatment, but some soreness or tenderness is normal when you first get braces or begin wearing aligners. Your mouth may need time to adjust, but any discomfort is typically temporary and improves as you adapt. If something feels unusually uncomfortable or doesn’t seem right, our team is always here to help.
5. Do I need to avoid certain foods with braces?
Yes! Most foods are still on the menu, but it’s best to avoid foods that are hard, sticky, or crunchy, as they can damage brackets and wires. Harder foods can often be enjoyed by cutting them into smaller pieces. A little extra care can help keep treatment on track and avoid unnecessary repairs.
6. Can my child continue sports, playing an instrument, and other regular activities?
Absolutely! Kids and teens can continue their regular activities, including sports and playing musical instruments. For sports, we recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect teeth and orthodontic appliances, especially during contact sports. Wind and brass musicians may have a short adjustment period after getting braces, but most adapt quickly.
7. Do I really have to wear a retainer?
Yes—for as long as you want to keep your teeth straight! Teeth naturally shift over time, so retainers help maintain your results after braces or Invisalign®. Dr. Willett may recommend removable, fixed, or a combination of retainers based on your needs. Long-term retainer wear helps protect your smile and your investment.
8. Does dental insurance cover orthodontic treatment?
It depends on your individual insurance plan. Some dental plans include orthodontic benefits, while others don’t, and coverage can vary based on age, treatment type, and plan limits. Our Lincoln Orthodontics team can help you understand your benefits and review treatment costs and payment options.
9. How often will I have orthodontic appointments?
During active treatment, patients typically visit Lincoln Orthodontics every 4–6 weeks. Timing may vary based on your treatment type and where you are in the process. Dr. Willett will determine the right appointment schedule to keep your treatment progressing.
10. What is the best way to floss with braces?
Flossing takes a little extra effort with braces, but it’s important for removing food and plaque around brackets and wires. Floss threaders and water flossers can make cleaning easier. Whatever method you choose, be sure to clean thoroughly around your teeth, gums, brackets, and wires every day to keep your smile healthy throughout treatment.
11. Should I get more than one orthodontic consultation?
Choosing an orthodontist is an important decision, and you should feel comfortable with both the treatment plan and the office providing your care. If you feel confident in the diagnosis and recommendations, there may not be a need for multiple consultations. However, if you’re unsure about a recommendation or want to better understand your options, a second opinion can be helpful. Different orthodontists may recommend different approaches based on their experience, training, treatment philosophy, and your goals.
Dr. Willett encourages patients to choose an office where they feel their questions are answered and they understand what is being recommended and why. Friends, family, and your general or pediatric dentist can also be helpful resources when choosing an orthodontist.
