Metal Braces
Metal braces have been around for a very long time, and they’re probably the most recognizable symbol of orthodontics for kids and adults. Dr. Willett and our team here at Lincoln Orthodontics know that metal braces are the most popular choice when it comes to your orthodontic treatment, and for good reason. They are durable, long lasting, and have years of proven success to back them up.
How Does it Work?
Scan those beautiful teeth.
Dr. Emily Willett and our team will collect photos of your mouth with our high-tech scanners. We often use our iTero Element scanner to scan each of your teeth and the layout of your gums and mouth. This process takes 10-15 minutes and provides us with an extremely accurate 3D view of your mouth. Say AH!

Hardware never looked so good!
Are you ready for some new hardware? Our metal brackets are long lasting and durable to withstand (most) of your favorite afternoon snacks. Dr. Willett will decide where to place each bracket to move your teeth into the best position for your metal braces. Once brackets have been applied, a wire will be threaded through hooks on your brackets and bent to provide pressure to different areas of your teeth. It takes precision and orthodontic expertise to get the right placement.

What’s your favorite color?
Let’s add elastics, bands, and spacers.
One of the most commonly asked questions from metal braces wearers is, What color bands do you have? We know that style is an important part of wearing braces. So, we have a beautiful color selection ready for you.
- Elastics are essential for bite correction, and can easily be strung between upper and lower bracket hooks.
- Orthodontic Bands are stainless steel rings that can provide anchors for your metal braces, but are only needed for certain patients.
- Spacers are small elastic “donuts” that are used to create space in between your teeth when needed, though not as delicious as the donuts you may enjoy for breakfast.

Treatment Time
How long will I have braces? This is the golden question, and the answers tend to vary. Every mouth is different, and every patient responds to treatment in their own way. The average time spent in metal braces is around 18 to 22 months, but could be shorter or longer, depending on the individual.
Bonus: If you follow Dr. Emily Willett’s direction, your metal braces treatment time will stay right on track and could potentially become shorter. Dr. Willett always knows best!
Technology | Materials
Dr. Willett consistently devotes her time to learning the most predictable and proven methods for orthodontic treatment, and that includes staying up to date with the best in braces and orthodontic technology.
Self-ligating braces are revolutionary in allowing the traditionally more difficult orthodontic movements to be accomplished early in treatment.
Pitts21 braces are the highest quality self-ligating braces available today. Their unique ligation system, smooth edges, and integrated hooks allow for the precision and comfort modern orthodontics requires.
The benefits of a self-ligating bracket or Pitts21 bracket are summed up in their reduced treatment times, often eliminating months from an average orthodontic treatment. The adjustment appointments can be more comfortable and the aesthetics are superior when using a ceramic Pitts21 bracket because there is no need for an elastic tie that can discolor.
Cost Information
Cost of braces will vary depending on your individual treatment plan. This is decided by Dr. Willett, based on the treatment goals, complexity of movements, and other individualized factors.
